Singapore : SingTel Satellite drives campaign to improve seafarer welfare [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SingTel Satellite, Asia s leading maritime communications group, has joined forces with three of the world s main maritime charities to help seafarers use onboard technology to keep in touch with loved ones at home. At the heart of the cooperation is a new seafarer Facebook campaign where seafarers are encouraged to use SingTel s CrewXchange@SingTel portal to communicate with family and friends while at sea. SingTel has pledged to donate S$1 for every Here s One From Me unique post placed by a crew member on the CrewXchange wall to the three charities Apostleship of the Sea, Seafarers UK and Sailors Society. These charities provide vital support and funding to seafarers and their families.

The campaign will potentially help play a part in improving the communication and educational needs of the seafarers and their families. SingTel Satellite is a satellite solutions provider and also an advocate for crew welfare. It not only creates solutions to aid operational efficiency and improve remote monitoring and control for shipping companies, but also creates solutions which improve the life of seafarers on board vessels. Lim Kian Soon, Head, Satellite at SingTel said: As a company, we take corporate social responsibility very seriously. Communication is vital to SingTel so it is only natural that we would want to get behind this campaign. We aim to provide affordable and effective methods for seafarers to stay in touch with their loved ones. Ultimately, the ability to stay connected with their friends and family is the key to improving the lives of the crew on board ships.

Jos Standerwick, Corporate & Trusts Fundraising Manager at Seafarers UK, said: We are absolutely thrilled that SingTel has launched this campaign. It will help thousands of seafarers across the world stay in touch with loved ones which is pivotal in our role to support them. The charity drive aims to create awareness and acknowledge the 1.5 million men and women who are out at sea in some format helping to keep our economy afloat. CrewXchange@SingTel is a data-optimised portal offering one-stop online entertainment and social media tools for seafarers. Seafarers can stay connected to the world and to their loved ones while out at sea. It is tested to work over popular broadband satellite services including maritime VSAT and FleetBroadband. Voice calls utilise the industry s lowest CODEC at 2.15kbps, consuming three times lower bandwidth than other currently available applications. Voice calls, PC to PC calls and PC to landlines and mobile phones calls can also be made using the service. This web-based service allows seafarers and their families and friends to access it anywhere on demand.
