Smarsh and Osterman Research Predict 42 Percent Growth for Enterprise Social Network Adoption in Two Years

PORTLAND, Ore. --(Business Wire)--

Smarsh®, the leading provider of hosted archiving solutions for compliance and e-discovery, today in partnership with Osterman Research released the white paper Managing Content in Enterprise Social Networks. The report identifies the rise in adoption of enterprise social networks, such as Microsoft (News - Alert) Yammer and Salesforce1 Chatter, and provides recommendations for organizations to ensure content is archived. A survey of mid-sized and large organizations commissioned for the project found that by 2016 the number of companies using these internal social tools is expected to grow by 42 percent.

"Our research shows a growing number of organizations are adopting enterprise social networks to solve internal communications challenges," said Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research. "As more content is created and stored, companies need to ensure they are archiving it to meet legal or regulatory retention, production and supervision needs."

Heavily regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, energy and pharmaceuticals are required to meet regulatory or statutory recordkeeping and oversight obligations for electronic messaging content. Archiving use cases extend beyond meeting compliance obligations, including litigation preparedness (e-discovery) and the preservation and curation of valuable corporate knowledge. The white pper recommends organizations use a third-party archiving solution to help solve these challenges.

"Our customers see the productivity and collaboration benefits of enterprise social networks, but also need to address their recordkeeping and supervision concerns," said Stephen Marsh, CEO and founder of Smarsh. "Smarsh helps them meet these obligations by integrating enterprise social network content into existing compliance and e-discovery workflows."

Among organizations surveyed that haven't yet deployed an enterprise social networking platform, nearly one in four indicated the reason they haven't is because of "too many regulatory, compliance or other issues to overcome." The white paper provides recommendations to help alleviate these concerns and considerations for implementing an archiving solution.

The white paper is available on the Smarsh website. Learn more about successfully integrating an enterprise social network and third-party archiving solutions through the Standard Life case study from Smarsh.
