Dhiraagu begins mobile network upgrade [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun (Dhiraagu), the Maldives' incumbent telecoms operator, has begun the implementation phase of a mobile network upgrade project first announced in April. The MVR95 million (USD6.1 million) programme is mainly focused on the development of Dhiraagu's 3G network and the rollout of 4G LTE services in cooperation with China's Huawei Technologies, enabling customers to achieve higher data speeds across the country. During the planned upgrade works, the company has indicated that from 30 July mobile services may be temporarily interrupted. *TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database notes that Dhiraagu launched commercial W-CDMA/HSDPA services in March 2010 under the brand '3G Plus', with the network currently covering more than 83% of the population. HSPA+ services were made available in April 2013, while the following August the company announced the launch of two LTE 'Experience Zones', where customers can trial Dhiraagu's 4G service for free. The zones form the first phase of the introduction of the firm's 4G services to the Maldives.
