Ukrtelecom's Crimean division being renamed, but should remain privately owned [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Ukrainian fixed network operator Ukrtelecom, part of the SCM conglomerate owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, is re-registering its Crimean division in accordance with Russian legislation under the name 'Nashtelekom', Interfax reports, quoting Crimea's Prime Minister Sergei Aksenov. Ukrtelecom reportedly serves more than 80% of the roughly 530,000 fixed line subscribers in the recently-annexed Crimea region, while the telco is also the largest fixed broadband access provider in the peninsular, with around 40% market share. Aksenov did not rule out the possibility of nationalising the Crimean department of Ukrtelecom, but expressed the hope that this can be avoided – although adding that this would depend 'on the behaviour of the owner.'
