SIM registration process gets underway in the CAR [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Central African Republic's (CAR's) telecoms regulator the Agence de Regulation des Telecommunications (ART) has reportedly begun a SIM registration process. According to Agence Ecofin, the decision to require SIM holders to register their information comes as a first step toward boosting security in the war-torn country, with customers of all four of the nation's cellcos – Telecel-RCA, Orange Centrafrique, Azur RCA and Moov Centrafrique – now required to hand over their details or face suspension of their service. With the process getting underway with a one-month awareness programme designed to inform customers of the need to register, the scheme faces one particular issue, with many in rural regions lacking any form of identification. To circumvent such problems it has been suggested that Azur RCA is allowing those subscribers without ID to register details as long as they are in the company of a sponsor that knows them that does have some proof of ID.
