NEC Chair, Data Center Director Attend Biometric Tech Confab


(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) at the head of a two-member delegation from the NEC has participated in a three day international conference on the application and sustainability of biometric technology in election management in Africa.



The conference which was held in Accra, Ghana, was organized by the Association of African Election Authorities.

The objective of the conference was to share lessons learned on the complexities, successes and failures involved in the application of biometric technology in election management as well as cross fertilize ideas that would produce a set of guidelines for the application and sustainability of biometric technology in elections administration in Africa.


During the conference, Chairman Korkoya moderated presentations made by the Elections Management bodies of Kenya, Sierra Leone and Cameroun.

The productivity of voters register using field biometric data capture or national registry; centralized national or progressive biometric data matching; outsourcing data matching and biometric verification to identify a voter during polling; etc., were among experiences shared at the three-day gathering.

Thematic discussions were also held on the exigencies of the existing legal framework for the application of biometric technology in election management; modalities for budgeting/financing for the acquisition of the biometric technology for elections and prudent procurement processes needed to be achieved and value for money, among others.

The Director of the Data Center of the NEC, Floyd Sayor, also attended the conference. Participants were drawn from all 21 member countries of the Association of African Election Authorities.
