SRFC green-lights 900MHz LTE plans [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Following a meeting with the State Radio Frequency Commission (SRFC), Nikolai Nikiforov, Russia's Minister of Communications, has confirmed that spectrum in the 890MHz-915MHz and 935MHz-960MHz bands will be authorised for Long Term Evolution (LTE) use; to date the frequencies have been reserved for GSM use. As previously reported by TeleGeography's CommsUpdate, December 2013 saw the watchdog authorise the 900MHz band for 3G use; that decision coincided with the SRFC's decision to allow operators to use the 1800MHz band for LTE use.*Also during this week's meeting, the SRFC rubber-stamped plans to hold an auction for spectrum in the 2570MHz-2620MHz band. The frequencies are presently used by a mixture of WiMAX and Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) operators. MMDS, also known as wireless cable, is often used for general-purpose broadband networking or, more commonly, as an alternative method of cable television programming reception in rural areas.
