Rocky Mountain Institute Senior Associate to Discuss 'Reinventing Fire' at IEEE Sustainability Conference, 24-26 July in Portland, Ore.

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, July 23 -- IEEE-USA, a unit of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, issued the following news release: Eric Wanless, senior associate with Rocky Mountain Institute's industry and electricity practices, will be the closing keynote speaker at the second IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech).

The event begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Portland (Ore.).

The goal of SusTech 2014 is to explore the development and application of science, engineering and technology to promote sustainability, which the United Nations defines as "the pursuit of environmentally sound development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the future." The program features workshops, keynotes and presentations of contributed papers and invited speakers on research, technologies, methodologies, tools and case studies in these major areas: * Alternative Energy * Energy Efficiency * Transportation Electrification * Smart Grid * Sustainable Electronics * Societal Implications / Quality of Life For more information and to register, see sites.ieee.org/sustech/. PDHs or CEUs are available through IEEE.

Wanless' keynote address, "Reinventing Fire: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era," will highlight how integrating all four energy-using sectors (transport, buildings, industry, electricity) and four kinds of innovation (technology, policy, design and strategy) can yield tripled efficiency, ~74 percent-renewable total supply, and an 80 percent-renewable, half-distributed, highly resilient electric grid.

Other keynote speakers and their topics include: * Dr. Digby D. Macdonald of UC Berkeley, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011: "Nuclear Options for Our Energy Future" * Joseph Fjelstad, founder and president of Verdant Electronics: "Sustainability Writ Large -- A Perspective on Sustainability, Its Impact and Implications" * Gerald Engel, professor, computer science and engineering, University of Connecticut - Stamford: "Ethic Responsibility" * Tom Tierney, IEEE-USA vice president, government relations: "Sustainability Policy in the U.S.: Creating and Preserving a Future for Our Next Generation" SusTech 2014 is sponsored by IEEE Region 6, the Oregon Section and IEEE-USA. Cosponsors include the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society and IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology.
