MTN named SA most valuable company [Agence de Presse Africaine]

(Agence de Presse Africaine Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listed mobile service operator MTN has been named as the most valuable brand in South Africa, a report said Tuesday. The Brand Finance South Africa Top 50 brands report states that MTN retained its position as the country's most valuable brand, increasing its total value to $5.38 billion from $5.17 billion in 2013.

The mobile communications company was also listed as the country's strongest brand together with financial house FNB which enjoyed 17 percent year-on-year brand growth.

According to the report, the mobile network accounts for 16.5 percent of total brand value among the top 50, while the top 10 brands including Sasol, Vodacom, Standard Bank, ABSA, NedBank, FNB, Mediclinic, Investec and Woolworths, account for 52 percent of total brand value.

Brand Finance calculates brand value using the Royalty Relief approach which involves estimating the likely future sales attributable to a brand and calculating a royalty rate that would be charged for the use of the brand.

MTN states on its website that it continues to invest in advanced communications networks in Africa and overseas. It presently connects more than 203.8 million people in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East. In the past five years, its capital expenditure exceeded $12.3 billion in the countries where it operates.

In the BrandAfrica 100 Most Valuable Brands in Africa report which evaluates brands across the continent, MTN also dominates Africa as the most valuable brand. A total of 450 brands were analysed across various industries. Going by sector there were 13 financial services brands and 16 food and beverage brands.
