Citus Data Adds Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL Core Contributor, to Advisory Board

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

Citus Data, creators of the horizontally scalable PostgreSQL database CitusDB, today announced the appointment of Josh Berkus to the company's advisory board. As one of the core contributors to the PostgreSQL project - the database technology at the heart of the CitusDB scalable analytics database - Berkus brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the Citus Data team to help guide it through its next phase of growth.

"I'm keen to help steer Citus Data to take advantage of the huge opportunities in large databases right now, and I'm even more enthusiastic about the contributions they are making to the PostgreSQL ecosystem," said Berkus. "I've already begun using and improving several of the open source tools the company has developed. Together I think we can push the size limits of relational databases using the CitusDB platform, and prove that you don't have to sacrifice relational power to get big data."

Josh Berkus is a member of the PostgreSQL Core Team, and is CEO of PostgreSQL Experts Inc., a consulting company that helps customers develop data warehousing solutions. Previously, he was in charge of PostgreSQL for Solaris at Sun Microsystems (News - Alert), and was istrumental in helping launch data warehousing startup GreenPlum, now part of EMC. Berkus has been on several advisory boards, including business intelligence company Actuate (News - Alert), PostgreSQL vendor EnterpriseDB and NoSQL vendor CouchDB.

"We are thrilled to have Josh on our team as a member of our advisory board, and look forward to benefiting from his unique perspective on PostgreSQL and the database marketplace," said Umur Cubukcu, CEO and cofounder of Citus Data. "Our mission is to democratize scalable SQL analytics by offering a simple and powerful data platform for users worldwide. Our CitusDB database, which combines the reliable features and flexibility of PostgreSQL with the performance and economics of horizontal scalability represents a giant leap in that direction."

With the realm of data growing exponentially, organizations need to examine both more data and more diverse types of data to stay competitive. Citus Data addresses this challenge by using PostgreSQL's extensive ecosystem to build a highly scalable data platform. Bringing together structured and semi-structured data, and designed from the ground up with parallelism in mind, the CitusDB database runs on cost-effective standard servers and responds in real-time to ad-hoc SQL queries on very large data sets.
