Solbox to Unveil New HEVC and MPEG-DASH Streaming Solution for UHD Video Services

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Seoul, Korea (PRWEB) July 21, 2014 The number of viewers enjoying matches on UHD (Ultra High Definition) TVs grew rapidly with the start of the latest World Cup season. With the recent boom in UHD broadcasting, both domestic and international content providers have been busy preparing measures for a more reliable and efficient transmission of high definition video.

Solbox (CEO Taeha Park, http://www.solbox.com), a leading CDN (Content Delivery Network) and cloud software provider, announced the launch of a new streaming solution for UHD video services, with support for the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) codec and MPEG-DASH (Motion Picture Experts Group-Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) protocol.

With the proliferation of a variety of smart devices and the explosion of high definition video content, the emergent issue has been the seamless transfer of content to users in an increasingly complex service environment. Many new technologies have been developed to solve this problem, and among them, the HEVC standard and MPEG-DASH protocol are by far the most highly regarded for processing large amounts of UHD video content data. Solbox is the first company in Korea to develop its own live-streaming server solution with support for both HEVC and MPEG-DASH.

The new HEVC standard supported by Solbox shows a data compression rate that is about twice as effective as that of the existing H.264 format and is suitable for transmission of UHD (or higher) video content. In addition, MPEG-DASH is an HTTP-based international standard in streaming protocols capable of ensuring service quality by optimizing streaming content for users' network environment conditions and bandwidth capacity.

Past April, North America's largest video streaming service provider, Netflix introduced a UHD service that supports HEVC, and Hulu is at the forefront of MPEG-DASH for its UHD service. Global OTT providers are taking advantage of HEVC and MPEG-DASH to prominently launch UHD services.

Taeha Park, CEO of Solbox, stated his intention to "identify market changes and take the initiative in streaming solutions optimized for UHD video services to keep the leadership in video streaming market." He finished by saying, "With a well-timed release in the current global expansion of UHD broadcasting, I anticipate that content providers will be able to deploy and provide advanced UHD services through Solbox's solutions."
