Microsoft to axe 18,000 ; TECHNOLOGY [Western Morning News (England)]

(Western Morning News (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Microsoft will axe up to 18,000 jobs over the next year as the software giant begins the steepest cuts in its 39-year history.

The reduction amounts to 14 per cent of the Washington-based firm's global workforce of 127,000, with around 12,500 jobs set to go at the Nokia mobile phone unit it bought in April. Microsoft would not say how many jobs are to go in the UK, where it employs 3,500 people.

Microsoft enjoyed success with its Windows and Office software but has been lagging behind in new technology.
