Tektronix revenue down again, but orders up for the first time since 2011 [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 17--Tektronix suffered its 11th consecutive decline in core revenues last quarter, but its orders were up for the first time since 2011.

Parent company Danaher Corp. reported second-quarter results Thursday morning, and while Danaher doesn't break out Tek's results it told investment analysts on a conference call that core revenues were down slightly.

In a written statement, Tek president Amir Aghdaei said that orders were up "modestly" last quarter, boosted by two new products -- the MDO3000 mixed-domain oscilloscope and the AWG70000 Arbitrary Waveform Generator.

Now a Danaher subsidiary, Tektronix is Oregon's most storied technology company and godfather to the state's entire tech cluster. Headquartered near Beaverton, Tek makes oscilloscopes and other tools that electronics manufacturers use to design and evaluate new gadgets, communications networks and equipment.

Tek said a Brazilian customer, Globosat, used Tektronix equipment to ensure image quality on an ultra-high definition, "4K" telecast of the World Cup this summer.

On Thursday's conference call, analysts pressed Danaher chief executive Larry Culp on whether Tek was enduring a prolonged, though cyclical, downturn or if there were structural problems with the business.

"We continue to be optimistic about Tek and its markets," Culp said. "What we haven't seen is that bounce back in (lab) bench spending that has typically followed every major downturn that we've studied in the history of the company. Things have been grinding for a while." But Tek's troubles aren't all the market's fault, Culp said: "So our task and challenge is to innovate as best we can." -- Mike Rogoway; twitter: @rogoway; 503-294-7699 ___ (c)2014 The Oregonian (Portland, Ore.)
