France : Airbus Defence and Space delivers Satellite Digital Processor to NEC [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) First Generation 3 Processor for an export customer successfully delivered.

Airbus Defence and Space, number two worldwide in space technology, has delivered the first ground-breaking Generation 3 digital processor to NEC Corporation (Japan) for a telecommunications satellite. The second processor is targeted to be delivered in September 2014.

The company has 25 years experience in designing, developing and manufacturing digital signal processors for telecommunications satellites. Digital processors enable the available frequency bands to be used more efficiently allowing satellite operators to serve more customers at the same time, while also ensuring the highest possible signal quality. Development work by the teams in Stevenage and Portsmouth in the 1990s led to the contract for the digital signal processors for the Inmarsat 4 satellites. These processors on the Inmarsat 4 satellite fleet, launched in the mid- 2000s, each perform 1000 billion calculations per second and allowed Inmarsat to provide new high-speed data services on a global basis.

Inmarsat s Alphasat satellite that was launched in July 2013 features eight Generation 3 digital processors from Airbus Defence and Space, providing more signal processing power on one satellite than all three Inmarsat 4 satellites. These processors enable Alphasat to generate hundreds of focused beams at the same time as they perform 10 trillion calculations per second.

Airbus Defence and Space currently is designing the fourth generation processor as part of a development contract funded jointly by itself, the UK s Technology Strategy Board and the European Space Agency. The Generation 4 processor will give satellite operators even more flexibility enabling greater scalability for systems from1 to 60Ghz. The Generation 4 design is due to be qualified in 2015. It will be 10 times more powerful than the Generation 3 one.
