Shreve looks to switch phone, Internet providers [Daily Record, The (Wooster, OH)]

(Daily Record, The (Wooster, OH) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SHREVE -- The village is looking to cut its phone and Internet bill in half, saving more than $200 per month by switching providers.

Fiscal Officer Jamie Greegor said the village pays about $470 per month for the phone system through CenturyLink, but Time Warner's business class option is quoting $264 per month for the same package.

"It is almost half of what we pay now, and that includes our Internet service," Greegor said at Monday's council meeting. "Plus, the Internet will be faster." The contract would be for three years, Greegor said, and includes phones used by the water and sewer plant, police station and village hall.

Mayor Bruce Biggs said he was in support of the switch as long as the rate is fixed during the contract and no phone numbers were changed, which Greegor said they would not be.

In other news, Greegor said police officers and firefighters will have to pay more into their retirement fund starting this month. Since 2013, the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund has been increasing the amount officers put into retirement from 10 percent to 11.5 percent per paycheck.

Greegor said the percentage is expected to go up again next year, and the officers have been notified of the increase.

In another matter, council discussed holding a meeting with residents who live in the flood plain in the village. Last year, council met with members of the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency to discuss flood insurance, but no residents were interested at that time.

Now, two residents want to purchase flood insurance, but are unable to since the village does not have a flood management plan in place.

"You can't get insurance ... because we (do not have) a flood management plan," Biggs said.

"So even if Shreve was in a flood and everybody's underwater, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) can't come and help us if we're not a part of that," Greegor said.

Greegor suggested the residents who live in the flood plain area be notified and possibly hold another information session before a council meeting to alert them of their options.

In a special meeting held June 28, council agreed to continue with Blair Bower as solicitor. With the new contract, Bower will be paid $625 per month, compared to his former contract with the village in which he was paid $800 per month.

The next council meeting will be July 21 at 7 p.m. with a personnel committee meeting beforehand at 6:30 p.m.
