JCC Info. Session July 23 for HIT Training Offered at Fort Drum

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) JEFFERSON, N.Y., July 8 -- The State University of New York's Jefferson Community College issued the following news release: Jefferson Community College (JCC) will hold an information session for its Health Information Technology Certificate Training Program for transitioning military, veterans and their family members on Wednesday, July 23 at 4:30 p.m. in Room E-129 (Extended Learning Center). Made possible by a Walmart Vocational Acceleration for Veterans Tuition Grant to advance the employment situation of transitioning service members and veterans, Jefferson is one recipient of only 11 community and technical colleges selected.

HIT makes it possible for health care providers to better manage patient care through secure use of electronically shared health information in place of paper medical records. As an increasing amount of physician practices and hospitals move toward the electronic health records (EHR) system, a growing amount of qualified HIT professionals are needed to assist hospitals and physicians as they move to adopt the EHR system.

JCC's HIT certificate training is a 9-month program redesigned to better meet the needs of the military and veteran population who may have little or no experience in the healthcare or technology fields. Based on a national curriculum model developed by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, JCC's HIT program consists of classroom and online learning, hands-on learning with an electronic health records (EHR) system, an apprenticeship and four job readiness workshops. Students will gain a working knowledge of health information management in an electronic environment and take two of three HIT certification exams designated for the role of implementation support specialist, technical/software support staff or implementation manager.

Classes for the HIT program will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Fort Drum DHR Education Annex beginning September 3, 2014.

The HIT training program ( costs $299, a significant savings of nearly $1000 made possible by the Walmart Vocational Acceleration for Veterans Tuition Grant through Syracuse University's Institute for Veterans and Military Families. Additional funding is available to offset the cost of childcare. Textbooks are not required.

Inquiries about the JCC HIT certificate training program and information session on July 23 can be directed to the JCC Continuing Education Division at 315-786-6591.

The Walmart Vocational Acceleration for Veterans Tuition Grant is part of the Walmart Foundation's $20 million dollar commitment to address veteran issues.
