Telecom watchdog: Poland's market falls by 3.7% y/y to EUR 9.7bn in 2013 [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]

(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The overall net value of Poland's telecommunications market declined by 3.7% y/y to PLN 40.15bn (EUR 9.66bn) in 2013, according to a report by the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE). Thus, it was yet another year of the market value's drop, the watchdog noted.

The mobile telecommunications market's value decreased by 1.5% y/y (i.e. by less than in 2012) to PLN 18.6bn. UKE attributed the drop primarily to MTR cuts, further expansion of flat-fee tariffs on the market as well as roaming services. At the same time, data transmission and text/multimedia messaging services noted double-digit growths. At the end of 2013, there were over 56mn Sim cards registered, which translates into market penetration of 148%.

The fixed-line telephony segment's value fell by nearly 4.8% y/y to PLN 4.3bn. Thus, the drop was by nearly 9pps milder than a year before, UKE notes. The number of fixed-line telephony subscribers decreased by 7.6% y/y to 6.8mn; most of them are individual subscribers - businesses constitute merely 19.6% of the customer base.

The internet access segment was the only one to post growth (of 3.7% to PLN 4.6bn) last year. The number of internet users increased at that time by 1.2mn, which means 88% of households now have internet access.
