Faster communications increase opportunities, expectations for businesses [The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Tenn. :: ]

(Knoxville News-Sentinel (TN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 03--Being able to communicate with customers is a key requirement of a successful business. While in previous years that may have meant just a landline phone, technology advancement has added new opportunities, but also comes with increased expectations from customers.

Companies now juggle the demands of websites, mobile access and social media, and that requires reliable service providers.

The Knoxville Book of Lists has ranked Knoxville area telecommunications providers by number of local employees.

Ranked No. 1 with 748 employees locally is mobile U.S. Cellular, which operates a regional customer service center in Knoxville. The company announced earlier this year that it was expanding existing 4G LTE services in Tennessee.

AT&T ranks second on the list with 680 employees. As one of the largest telecommunications providers in the U.S., the company offers mobile telephone service, but also landline, TV and internet services to business and residential customers.

Third is another national player, Comcast Corp., which also offers bundled services for video, voice and Internet. It employs 658 people in six Knoxville area offices.

Number four on the list, Cellular Sales, is a locally owned Verizon Wireless reseller.

Rounding out the top five is TDS Telecom, the seventh largest local exchange telephone company in the country. The subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems Inc. has 150 area employees.
