Google introduces its Android Auto system [Cape Times (South Africa)]

(Cape Times (South Africa) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FOLLOWING the recent launch of Apple's iOS-based CarPlay in-car operating system, Google has followed suit with its own version running on the Android platform.

Called Android Auto, the new operating system allows motorists to link their Android phones or tablets to their cars, using the car's own controls (including steering wheel and voice controls) to operate them.

In addition to live traffic information and local search, Android Auto allows users to access their music, contacts and messages while keeping their eyes on the road.

There's also an Android Auto software development kit that will allow third-party firms to develop a whole range of new apps for use in the car.

Android Auto is part of the recently-formed Open Automotive Alliance between leading motor manufacturers and technology companies. By using Android as a common platform, the OAA aims to make technology in cars safer, more seamless and more intuitive.

Major auto brands already signed up include the Volkswagen Group, General Motors, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Fiat Chrysler, Renault Nissan, Mazda and Volvo. Google will introduce Android Auto later this year, but has not said what brands will offer it initially. Apple's CarPlay has already been confirmed for select Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo models. - Motoring Staff Cape Times (c) 2014 Independent Newspapers (Pty) Limited.
