West Palm Beach airport adds TSA PreCheck application center [Sun Sentinel :: ]

(South Florida Sun Sentinel (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 01--Travelers departing Palm Beach International Airport now have a more convenient way to apply for TSA PreCheck, a federal program that offers expedited security screening at local airports and others nationwide.

On Tuesday, Transportation Security Administration and airport representatives officially marked the opening of the new on-site TSA PreCheck application center.

"This application process greatly increases the availability of TSA PreCheck benefits to a broader population of travelers in the Palm Beach area," said TSA Federal Security Director Karen Hanlon, ina statement.

With TSA PreCheck, pre-approved U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are allowed to leave shoes, light jackets and belts on, and not have to pull out a laptop or small containers of liquids and gels from carry-on bags.

The West Palm Beach airport began offering TSA PreCheck expedited screening lanes in October.

"Having a TSA PreCheck application center in our airport is a great convenience for our passengers," said Bruce Pelly, director of airports, Palm Beach County.

The PBI enrollment center is located on the main level of the terminal across from the KidZoo store near the business center. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The application cost is $85 for five years and the TSA recommends that qualified persons first complete the pre-enrollment at tsa.gov then make an appointment to complete the process at the airport's enrollment center. Proof of citizenship or immigration status as well as fingerprinting is required.

Approved travelers will receive a Known Traveler Number or KTN and will have the opportunity to use TSA PreCheck security lanes at 118 participating airports and on 11 airlines, including Delta, JetBlue and American.

Even if a traveler is approved for PreCheck, expedited screening isn't guaranteed each time he or she flies as random and unpredictable security measures may require all travelers to be screened, the TSA said.

In Palm Beach County, a TSA PreCheck enrollment center is also located at the Port of Palm Beach in Riviera Beach at 301 Broadway.

TSA PreCheck expedited screening is also available at Fort Lauderdale and Miami international airports.

In May an application center opened in Fort Lauderdale at Universal Enrollment Center/Safe Sky Inc. at 650 SW 34th St. Another center is located in Miami at 1001 North America Way.
