Size of Turkish e-commerce market reaches EUR 4.8bn last year. [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]


(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The size of Turkey's e-commerce market reached TRY 14bn (EUR 4.8bn) in 2013, a report by the Informatics Industry Association (TUBISAD) and Deloitte Turkey showed.

The share of online shopping in total retail sales was 1.3%, and this figure points to a strong growth potential for the e-commerce industry, the report concludes. The comparable figures are 7.4% for the U.S, 10.4% for the U.K, 5.6% for China, and 5.3% for Poland, according to data provided in the report.



Online tourism & travel business had the largest share in total e-commerce activities with TRY 5.1bn, followed by online retailing-only segment with TRY 5bn, and multichannel retailing with TRY 2.3bn.

The internet penetration rate in Turkey was 49% last year, compared to 87% in the UK, 81% in the U.S, 44% in China and 30% in Poland. As of end-2013, there were total of 1,263 online shopping websites in Turkey, according to the report.
