MindShine Technologies Publishes White Paper on Streamlining and Improving Dropout Prevention

DULUTH, Ga. --(Business Wire)--

More than three million students exit America's public high schools each year without graduating. Typically, the decision to drop out isn't based on just one factor, but rather a culmination of several risk factors that result in disengagement from school. To help K-12 educators gain insight into how student data can be used to improve dropout prevention efforts - from preschool through high school - MindShine Technologies today announces a new white paper titled, "From Early Warning to Professional Development: Streamlining the Process and Expanding the Scope of Dropout Prevention."

The paper details the financial and social costs of dropping out, the warning signs of prospective dropouts, the strengths and flaws in early-warning systems, and a new soution called the Student Risk Assessment System that expands and improves on what has gone before. Click to Tweet.

"In my work as a school principal and district superintendent, and in MindShine Technologies' ongoing discussions with school and district leaders, we've identified several risk factors that make one student more likely to drop out than another. From absenteeism to home environment, these factors are surprisingly similar, state-to-state and district-to-district. Yet, most early-warning systems track only one or two of these factors and fail to look at the whole child," said Bob Darby, vice president of client services for MindShine Technologies. "An effective early-warning system should track multiple risk factors to help educators calculate a student's potential risk for dropping out. Moreover, it should allow educators to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the actions they implement to reduce those risk factors, so they can make informed decisions that keep students engaged in school."

At the ISTE Conference next week in Atlanta, MindShine will launch their answer to this need. It's called the Student Risk Assessment System, a web-based data system that helps K-12 districts quickly and easily identify students with multiple risk factors for dropping out, so they can take action early. The system, which can be implemented with students of any age, also allows districts to track and analyze the impact of their actions. With this information, educators can make informed decisions about how to help each individual reach graduation. By proactively helping students who might otherwise struggle with their educational experience, districts can improve student performance, reduce disciplinary problems, increase attendance and ADA/ADM funding, and lower dropout rates.
