National Wildlife Federation and ACA Partner to Reconnect Families with the Great Outdoors

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) RESTON, Va., June 23 -- The American Camp Association issued the following news release: National Wildlife Federation (NWF), whose mission is to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future, is pleased to announce a partnership with the American Camp Association (ACA). Through this partnership, NWF and ACA will promote Great American Backyard Campout which encourages families across the nation to gather outdoors and camp on June 28, 2014, and the importance of reconnecting families with the outdoors.

"NWF and ACA are committed to helping families view the outdoors as a source of fun and healthy recreational time," said Maureen Smith, chief marketing officer at National Wildlife Federation. "ACA and NWF will share their resources like wildlife guides, outdoor activities, and more to help parents make nature an exciting part of their children's everyday lives." Take the pledge to camp today Whether it is in the backyard, together with neighbors, with friends at a local park, or at a large community event, NWF encourages parents and kids alike to trade screen time for green time by spending a night under the stars. Take the pledge to camp on June 28th or anytime of the year (https://online.nwf.org/site/SPageServer/;jsessionid=561BB4D6ED452E3087FF2FE4F822DF51.app244a?s_subsrc=Web_Sidebar_GABC_PledgetoCamp&pagename=gabc_2014_registration_survey).

"Forming an educational alliance with NWF is another way ACA is working to get kids outdoors, reaping the benefits and enjoyment of outdoor experiences. NWF and ACA want to work together to see that children, youth, and families continue to have access today -- and tomorrow -- to the outdoors. Quality camp experiences often center on nature and the outdoors, which research has shown to give children and youth lasting social, emotional, and cognitive gains," said Peg Smith, ACA's chief executive officer.

ACA's extensive research includes findings about the impact of nature experiences on children at camp, as well as program quality assessment, business operations, and outcomes such as leadership, friendship skills, and responsibility. Visit www.ACAcamps.org/research.

Now in its 10th year, Great American Backyard Campout is a part of National Wildlife Federation's 10 Million Kids Outdoors Campaign (http://www.nwf.org/What-We-Do/Kids-and-Nature.aspx). This three-year initiative seeks a future where all children spend time outside each day, creating a generation of happier and healthier children with more awareness and connection to the natural world. National Wildlife Federation has worked to connect children and youth with nature for decades, inspiring children through Ranger Rick magazine (http://www.nwf.org/Kids/Ranger-Rick.aspx), working with educators to get kids learning outdoors, and helping parents find new ways to engage their children outside.
