Colorado Technical University to Award 50 Full Scholarships through 2015 Wounded Warrior Scholarship Program

Colorado Technical University (CTU) today announced its call for applications for the school's 2015 Wounded Warrior Scholarship Program. Established in 2008 in partnership with the Yellow Ribbon Fund, the program fully covers the cost of education at CTU for active duty servicemembers and veterans who were injured while serving our country, as well as the spouses of wounded servicemembers and veterans. The scholarship covers tuition, books and fees for a single degree program, plus a new laptop computer.

CTU awards 50 scholarships annually - 25 to wounded servicemembers and 25 to spouses of wounded warriors. To date, CTU has provided 300 scholarships valued at $4.5 million to honor our brave heroes and their spouses.

"Through this annual award program, we strive to put education and training within reach for these men and women so they can redefine the next stage of their lives," said Bob Lally, M.S., retired naval captain and director of CTU's Wounded Warrior Scholarship Program.

For many, the scholarship provides an opportunity to gain the education and skills needed for a military promotion or to start a new career after military service ends. For others, the scholarship may provide a pathway to a new career opportunity or career advancement, which may be necessary for those who, as result of their spouse's injuries, are now the financial head of household.

Long Standing Commitment to Military Members

CTU makes it a priority to support wounded warriors and veteran spouses who often serve as caregivers and seek flexible career opportunities in order to support their families. Through the Wounded Warriors Scholarship Program, both military members and their spouses have an opportunity to pursue their education and advance their careers.

"I wasn't able to go to college before, and now that I'm able to, I have to grab the opportunity," said Norma Boyd, a Wounded Warrior spouse scholarship recipient. She and her husband, wounded warrior and Army Specialist Brandon Boyd, both received scholarships in 2013. "It's been challenging, ut we've had a lot of faith. And we have each other's backs. That's why CTU giving us the opportunity to do this together makes it more special, because now it's another journey that we get to do together."

Part of CTU's mission is to provide a quality college education that is flexible, accessible, welcoming and rewarding to and their spouses. The school's relationship with military and veteran students dates back to 1965 when the Colorado Springs campus opened its doors to support the educational goals of students from five nearby military bases.

"As the past Chairman for the Scholarship Selection Committee, it has been a true honor to partner with CTU and select the wounded warrior and spouse scholarship recipients," said retired Army Command Sergeant Major Martin Pate III. Approximately one-third of current CTU students are active military, reservists, veterans and military spouses. CTU addresses their needs with flexible class options, often taught by instructors who are also veterans, access to teams of trained experts who understand military education benefits, and by providing transfer credit for eligible military training and prior college experience. CTU supports active duty military students while they are deployed, by offering programs that are available entirely online - anywhere and anytime.

How to Apply for the Wounded Warrior Scholarship Program

Those interested in the scholarship must complete an application and write an essay highlighting the obstacles he or she has faced as a wounded warrior or spouse of a wounded warrior. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on their strong desire to advance their education and plans to apply their degree for career advancement after completing the program.

Candidates must provide proof of high school graduation or equivalency documents and be the spouse of or an active United States Armed Forces member or veteran who is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries suffered in combat or injuries received in the line of duty while serving in a combat zone during Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom.
