Coutts-US close: Dow snaps six-day winning streak as Iraq offsets data

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 24 June 2014 Release date- 23062014 - US close: Dow snaps six-day winning streak as Iraq offsets data.

Iraq concerns outweigh housing, manufacturing data - Kerry says US to provide support to Iraq forces - Oracle to buy Micros Systems - Wisconsin Energy to buy Integrys Dow Jones: -0.06% Nasdaq: 0.01% S&P 500: -0.01% US stocks finished broadly flat on Monday after a subdued session on Wall Street as ongoing concerns about the crisis in Iraq outweighed improving domestic economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average inched 0.06% lower, snapping a six-day winning streak, while the S&P 500 retreated 0.01% from a record high reached on Friday.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, edged 0.01% higher. Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst from IG, said that housing and manufacturing figures Stateside were 'encouraging' today, 'but overall the feel was one of profit-taking rather than the start of a new leg down'.

'If markets earlier in the year lacked a positive catalyst for gains, then at the moment they do not have a catalyst for a correction.

[...] A worsening of the situation in Iraq, leading to a dramatic spike in oil prices, would fit the bill, but perhaps a bigger worry remains the lack of volatility,' he said. Oil prices slipped today but still remained near multi-month highs after Sunni militants in Iraq captured border crossings to Syria and Jordan after continued fighting on Sunday. US Secretary of State John Kerry said the country will provide 'intense, sustained' support to Iraqi security forces in their fight against an extremist-led insurgency.

He said Iraq faced an 'existential threat' from the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

'The support will be intense, sustained, and if Iraq's leaders take the steps needed to bring the country together it will be effective,' Kerry said during a visit to Baghdad.

In economic data, the Markit US manufacturing purchasing managers' index improved to 57.5 in June from 56.4 the month before, surprising analysts who expected a dip to 56.0. Existing-home sales smashed expectations, rising 4.9% to 4.89m in May after a revised 1.5% rise to 4.66m the month before.

This was the fastest growth in seven months and better than the consensus forecast for 4.74m. Micros, Integrys rise on M&A Shares in Micros Systems gained strongly after software giant Oracle agreed to buy the tech group for $5bn. Integrys Energy Group jumped 12% after Wisconsin Energy announced a cash-and-stock deal to acquire the company for $5.7bn. General Electric fell despite the news that the board of French rail and energy firm Alstom unanimously voted to accept the $17bn bid from the US conglomerate.
