2014 BIO International Convention Kicks Off in San Diego


SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)--

The 2014 BIO International Convention, the world's largest biotechnology event, kicks off today in the San Diego Convention Center and goes through Thursday, June 26. Hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, this year's event is expected to attract more than 3,000 biotechnology companies and more than 15,000 attendees from 48 states and 65 countries.

Convention Highlights Include:

  • Keynote Luncheon: Sir Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin Group, Tuesday, June 24
    Please note: this Keynote session is open to attendees who have registered as Convention Access or higher as well as credentialed members of the print media only. No broadcast cameras allowed.
  • Keynote Luncheon: Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former Secretary of State, Wednesday, June 25
    Media Coverage: The event is open to the press. All members of the media who attend the event must check in - and be provided credentials at Media Registration. Names and IDs will be checked. Seating for print media is limited. Once designated seating is full, media will be directed to an overflow room.
    Media entrance: Media may enter at the D/E entrances.

  • One-on-One Partnering at the 2014 BIO International Convention, Tuesday, June 24 - Thursday, June 26
    BIO's partnering program is the most efficient and economical way to find a business partner at the largest venue for private company-to-company meetings ("partnering") in the world. According to the 2013 Campbell Alliance's Deal Makers' Intentions report, partnering events such as BIO 2014 drive the majority of successful deals in the biopharma industry.   • First Ever Digital Health Forum, Tuesday, June 24 - Wednesday, June 25
    BIO, in partnership with the Wireless-Life Sciences Alliance, is excited to introduce the first ever Digital Health Forum and Zone at the 2014 BIO International Convention. The Digital Health Forum will explore the intersection of digital health, biotech and pharma. Idustry thought leaders, stakeholders and innovators, along with forum Co-Chairs Wainwright Fishburn, Board Member, WLSA and Partner, Cooley LLP; Andrew Thompson, Co-Founder and CEO of Proteus Digital Health; and WellDoc (News - Alert), will highlight digital health's role in drug development, clinical trials, medication compliance, mobile prescription therapies, new business models, big data and much more.   • Super Session: EY 2014 Biotechnology Industry Report, Wednesday, June 25
    Ernst & Young's 2014 biotechnology industry report explores approaches that allow companies to "unlock value" by conducting R&D in ways that are both more capital-efficient and better aligned with the need to demonstrate value. The report highlights three such approaches: precision medicine, adaptive trials and pre-commercial collaborations.
  • Super Session: AMP-lifying Innovation: NIH, Patient Organizations & Leading Biopharma Firms Mobilize to Tackle Tough Diseases, Wednesday, June 25
    The Accelerating Medicines Partnerships (AMP) is a new venture among the NIH, several non-profit organizations and 10 biopharmaceutical companies focused on transforming the current model for developing new treatments. The Session will highlight the goals and implementation plans for the new AMP program as well as explore the evolution of large-scale public private partnerships in an evolving innovation ecosystem.
  • Super Session: The Next Big Deal: The Global Dealmaker Perspective, Thursday, June 26
    Campbell Alliance and BIO will present updated findings from two unique forward-looking measures of deal-making in the industry - the Campbell Alliance Dealmakers' Intentions Study and the BIO One-on-One Partnering Forecast. Panelists will explore the impact of these market forces on pharmaceutical and biotech companies as they positions themselves to make the next big deal.
  • Super Session: Scientific American WorldView Super Session - Biotech: We are the World, Thursday, June 26
    Moderated by David Brancaccio, host of Marketplace Morning Report, this event will explore key themes form Scientific American's annual biotechnology edition, featuring the WorldView Scorecard and fresh perspectives on international life science development.

Media registration is open from 7:00am - 6:30pm at the San Diego Convention Center. The Convention program features more than 160 sessions in 8 breakout sessions and 9 specialty forums. The majority of attendees, 70 percent, are c-level executives. They split evenly from large companies of 500 or more employees and small companies of 50 employees or less.
