She would later remark that this encounter opened her eyes "to other people and the way they live". 1968 Having been an active Republican in her youth, she becomes a Democrat. 1973 Graduates from Yale Law School. Throughout her time at Yale she provides free legal advice for the poor. 11 October 1975 Marries Bill Clinton, also a law student at Yale, in a Methodist ceremony in their living room. 1977 President Jimmy Carter appoints her to the board of directors at the Legal Services Corporation. The following year she becomes the first woman to chair the board. 27 February 1980 Gives birth to her daughter, Chelsea. 1988 Named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America by the National Law Journal; she is named again in 1991. 1993-2001 Clinton is first lady as the wife of President Bill Clinton, playing a central role in public policy matters. 2001-2009 Throughout George W Bush's presidency, she represents New York in the US Senate. 20 January 2007 Announces she is running for the Democratic presidential nomination. 7 June 2008 Concedes to Barack Obama. She says: "The challenges that I have faced in this campaign are nothing compared to those that millions of Americans face every day in their own lives." 2009-2013 Serves as 67th US secretary of state, until she is succeeded by John Kerry. December 2012 Is hospitalised for three days when doctors find a blood clot between her brain and skull after a concussion three weeks earlier. April 17 2014 Announces her daughter's pregnancy via Twitter to her 1.5 million followers.
