New industrial orders rise 1.3% y/y in April 2014 [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]


(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The total value of new orders in the Slovak industry increased 1.3% y/y to EUR 3.8bn in April, slowing from a 6.2% annual growth the month before, data from the statistics office showed.



New orders in the vehicles manufacturing industry, which accounts for nearly than half of total orders, fell by 1.5% y/y in April, after increasing 7.6% y/y the month before. Slovakia is home to car plants run by Germany's Volkswagen, France's PSA Peugeot-Citroen and South Korea's Kia Motors.

The manufacture of computers, electronics and optics, the second most important sector for Slovakia's export-oriented economy, recorded a 3.4% annual drop in orders in April, compared with an 8.0% y/y growth the month before. Slovakia hosts plants run by South Korea's Samsung and Taiwan's Foxconn On a monthly basis, seasonally-adjusted industrial orders rose 1.6% in April after decreasing 2.5% in March.


In 2013, the value of new industrial orders rose 3.5% y/y to EUR 42.7bn.

IntelliNews comment:  Slovak industrial orders increased for the eighth month in a row in April helped by a 29.6% annual rise in the electrical equipment sector which offset  the drops recorded in the country's two most important sectors, the car and and computer manufacturing industries. Slovak industrial orders are expected to continue their upward trend in the following period on the back of recovering domestic consumption and a stronger growth in exports. According to the European Commission, private consumption will rise by 1.3% this year and by 2.3% next year. Exports are seen rising by 5.6% in 2014. Slovakia's industrial output growth slightly weakened to 5% y/y in April 2014 from 5.9% a month earlier .
