New in controlgear, switchgear, and more The American National Standards Institute has adopted the following Underwriters Laboratories safety standards: * ANSI/UL 60947-4-1A-2014, Standard for Safety for Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear-Part 4-1: Contactors and MotorStarters-Electromechanical Contactors and Motor Starters. National adoption of IEC 60947-1 with modifications and revision of ANSI/UL 60947-4-1A-2011.

* ANSI/UL 60947-4-2-2014. Standard for Safety' for Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear-Part 4-2: Contactors and Motor Starters-A-C Semiconductor Motor Controllers and Starters. National adoption with modifications of IEC 60947-4-2.

What's new from NEMA In the field of motors, and supplementing MG 1, Motors and Generators, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association has issued new editions of two standards governing rotating machine applications: * MG 2-2014, Safety Standard for Construction and Guide for Selection, Installation, and Use of Electric Motors and Generators, offering recommendations applicable to "the practical safeguarding of persons and property." This is a revision of the 2007 edition. Copies may be downloaded free, or hard copies purchased for $91. by going to www.nema.org and searching for the document by name.

* MG 10-2013. Energy Management Guide for Selection and Use of Fixed Frequency Medium A-C Squirrel-Cage Polyphase Induction Motors, also a newly revised edition. Copies may be downloaded free, or hard copies purchased for $77. on the NEMA Web site.

NEMA has also published a White Paper, NEMA ABP 4-2013, titled Taking the Guesswork out of Selecting and Maintaining Molded Case Circuit Breakers. Copies may be downloaded free from the NEMA Web site.

Meanwhile. NEMA has also issued the following new standards: * MG 1-2011 condensed Information Guide for General Purpose Industrial A-C Small and Medium Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor Standards. This is a condensation of the overall motor and generator standard MG 1-2011. omitting material on d-c and synchronous machines and "large" motors. Some parts of the larger standard are reprinted in their entirety, while others have been combined or abbreviated.
