New 3.75kW server emulator supplies the load in Data Centre testing (MM0001)

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mafi Mushkila, a leading provider of data centre services, has announced the availability of a new 3.75kW heat load bank or server emulator, designed to facilitate the testing of electrical and cooling systems in a controlled environment.

The latest 3.75kW offering from Mafi Mushkila compliments its range of rack mounted server emulators, designed to meet all requirements - from basic load, close match Delta-t to servers and high density applications. The 3.75kW unit is one of the most powerful rack mounted heat loaders available and features a 230v 50Hz single phase input, a power input of 3.824kW, a heater power of 1.875kW/3.75kW (switched) and an airflow volume of 241l/s.

A new data centre or IT equipment room is often expected to run continuously for the duration of its life. To achieve this faultless reliability it is necessary to thoroughly test the infrastructure before it is operational. To do this effectively operators need to simulate the characteristics of the IT equipment as closely as possible in terms of airflow versus heat output.

According to Dave Wolfenden, managing director of Mafi Mushkila, a small and powerful server emulator is an invaluable tool in the data centre or IT equipment room. He commented, 'IT infrastructure consumes a great deal of power and generates heat, it is therefore imperative that demands are fully understood before the data centre or IT room goes live. A powerful 19 inch rack mountable server emulator provides accurate results in a compact and simple to manage package.' During the testing phase it is vital to have fixed, predictable loads.

However, using real servers to carry out the tests is prohibitive due to the costs associated with kitting out the data centre, the potential for equipment damage and the amount of time it takes to reset servers after each and every test.

With this in mind, the safest and most economic method for carrying out tests is by utilising a server emulator, with the capability to provide the required electrical and heat load and ensure that the testing of the electrical and cooling systems are undertaken in a controlled, secure environment. Mafi Mushkila heat load solutions are designed to be mounted on industry standard 19 inch racks, with each 3.75kW unit occupying 3U of rack space. All units can be supplied on a 'rental only' basis or as part of a fully managed service package which offers installation, management of the load banks for the duration of the testing period and an uninstall at the end. Temporary blanking plates can also be installed.

The companys server emulators have been successfully used for the testing of small, medium and mega data centres, as well as IT rooms, across Europe.

The heat loads have been used in market sectors such as insurance, banking, investment banking, petrochemicals, telecommunications, military and genetics research.

Controls and a C20 power connection can be found at the rear of the new 3.75kW unit. 16 Amp commando power cables as well as power distribution from either 32 Amp or 63 Amp single or three phase distribution are also available.

Most recently, this has evolved into the specialist area of server emulators - rack-mounted systems that provide heat and electrical load testing facilities before costly servers are installed in a data centre. Developing specialised technology to meet the server load testing requirements of clients, Mafi Mushkila now provides extensive consultancy and testing services to companies, many of whom need to operate their data centres in remote locations with minimal staffing. This makes robustness and self-reliance a watchword in modern data centres - effective testing before the server equipment is installed helping to ensure good IT systems reliability and longevity.
