Motorola Solutions Upgrades North Carolina's Burke County with Latest 9-1-1 Dispatching Technology

Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI (News - Alert)) and Intrado announced the future implementation of an Advanced 9-1-1® (A9-1-1®) system in Burke County, N.C. This system includes MCC 7500 Dispatch Console's and enables a migration path to the NG9-1-1 emergency call taking solution being developed alongside Intrado (News - Alert). It also sets in motion the eventual migration to a full NG9-1-1 system to support text-to-9-1-1 capabilities.

The new A9-1-1 system gives Burke County the ability to transfer 9-1-1 calls, along with associated location information and other data, between different county systems seamlessly over an IP system and implement a back-up call center from multiple locations in case of an emergency. The system will effectively cut down response times by minimizing the time it takes for a call to come in to the dispatch center while giving the Burke County dispatch operations center a technological upgrade.

The long-term benefit of the A9-1-1 purchase comes in the form of a new system architecture to support the NENA i3 standard of NG9-1-1. This represents the transition to the next technological breakthrough in 9-1-1 call taking through bridging the gap between legacy wireline and wireless networks by integrating them in an end-to-end IP system. Burke County's A9-1-1 system includes an upgrade to call routing and automated location information, the first step in bridging that gap. With the May 15 text-to-9-1-1 agreement in place, the four predominant carriers in the United States will support text-to-9-1-1, which is the next stepping stone to a full NG9-1-1 system.

• IP call set up times reduces set up time over analog calls, providing faster response.
• Burke County 9-1-1 serves a population of approximately 90,000 and covers more than 515 square miles. The 9-1-1 center manages more than 97,000 calls for service each year through 10 dispatch positions and provides dspatch services for 7 police departments and 19 fire departments.
• Burke County is the first county in Western North Carolina to migrate to the MCC 7500 and A9-1-1, thus allowing for increased network security in emergency situations by gaining the ability to implement back-up call centers from multiple locations.
• Intrado and Motorola (News - Alert) Solutions' continued collaboration builds on this change in 9-1-1 call taking by implementing better, faster, more reliable technologies to keep customers on the cutting edge of this new dispatch evolution. Intrado's leading technology in the text-to-9-1-1 capability provides the necessary architecture for the advancement of Burke County to the possibility of a full NG9-1-1 system.
