Spy helped terrorists [Eire Region] [People, The (England)]

(People, The (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) THANKS to Edward Snowden we will all be a little less safe in our beds tonight.

To those who published the secret documents the US whistleblower stole, Snowden is a hero.

To those of us who value our freedom to live in peace he is a menace.

By revealing how US and UK spy agencies monitor the internet he has made it easier for terrorists to hide from view. And that makes it easier for them to attack us.

Keeping tabs on the bad guys is no longer a simple matter of tapping telephones or steaming open envelopes. Terrorists use the web for sophisticated encrypted communications. They talk to each other through social networking sites, in chat rooms, even while playing computer games.

As long as our spies were technologically one step ahead of them we were in with a fighting chance of thwarting their attacks.

Britain has now lost that edge because of Snowden's revelations.

It is a tribute to the skill and dedication of the men and women who look after the nation's security that terrorists so rarely get lucky.

But MI5, MI6 and GCHQ have to be lucky all the time. Terrorists only need to be lucky once to unleash a 7/7 slaughter.

Our privacy is precious. So there is a balance to be struck between too much spying and not enough.

What Snowden has done is tip that balance towards terrorism.
