Homeowners May Not Be Covered in a Dog Bite Incident

SANDY, Utah --(Business Wire)--

During the third week in May, XINSURANCE will join other organizations to call attention to the problem of dog bites, one of the nation's most commonly reported public health problems. One repercussion that is rarely discussed is the cost to dog owners who have no liability insurance or who discover too late that their homeowners policy does not cover the incident.

Every year, dogs bite humans a staggering 4.5 million times in the U.S. About 20% of those incidents require medical attention, and children are the most frequent victims. According to the Insurance Information Institute, dog bite claims for U.S. insurers are also on the rise, climbing 5.5 percent last year to 17,359, breaking the record from 2003.

Pets are more of a liability than most dog owners realize, at least until it's too late. Many owners only find out after an incident that their specific breed is excluded from their homeowners policy. Insurance companies have been adding more limitations in the past few years with cutting coverage for certain breeds or in some cases cutting it altogether.

"Even if you do everything right to prevent your dog from being in a situation where they could bite, it can still happen," said Rick Lindsey, President f XINSURANCE, a company specializing in liability insurance including dog liability coverage. "It's important for dog owners to be prepared and have all the information they need to handle such an event."

With increasingly strict state and local regulations being enforced across the country, animal liability and dog bite insurance coverage are things that every dog owner should consider. Without it, a serious dog attack can create medical bills and compensation worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs to the pet owner.

During National Bite (News - Alert) Prevention Week, XINSURANCE will be posting helpful dog-bite prevention tips, statistics and other information on social media. XINSURANCE representative, Logan Fitzgerald, will also be attending Animal Care Expo in Daytona Beach, Florida that week and will be available for interviews and to answer media questions on these issues.

With an estimation of 1 dog for every 4.5 people in the U.S., there's never been a more crucial time to take steps to prevent dog bites and to be prepared in the event the unexpected happens.
