WSO2 CTO to Present Session on Security Challenges Facing Internet of Things at O'Reilly Solid Conference 2014

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) May 14, 2014 The Internet of Things (IoT) is providing opportunities for enterprises to create new business models for interacting and collaborating with customers and partners. At the same time, IoT brings new challenges to protecting privacy and data. WSO2 co-founder and CTO Paul Fremantle will address the security issues faced by IoT devices at the O'Reilly Solid Conference 2014.

WSO2 is an Emergent Innovator Sponsor of the O'Reilly Solid Conference, which will run May 21-22, 2014 at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, CA.

Security Challenges for the Internet of Things Paul's session, "Your Thing is pwnd – Security Challenges for IoT," is designed for anyone working with data from Internet-connected devices or using things that are built using an IoT device. It will be held 3:45 - 4:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 in the Festival Pavilion room.

Paul will examine how the growth of Internet-connected devices, from health monitoring gadgets to home automation systems, has opened the door to IoT security breaches. He also will discuss how the industry has been lulled by the simplicity of devices that are often built on 8-bit microcontrollers. Additionally, Paul will cover common weaknesses in IoT devices, such as the use of default passwords and unencrypted radio communications or networking. Finally, Paul will review specific attacks against things, why they matter, and what can be done about them.

About the Presenter Paul Fremantle is WSO2 co-founder and CTO, and he is co-chair of the OASIS Web Services Reliable eXchange Technical Committee. Recognized by InfoWorld as a Top 25 CTO, he was responsible for simultaneously leading development of the groundbreaking WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus and Apache Synapse ESB. Paul has played a pioneering role in open source development, beginning with the original Apache SOAP project and his role in leading IBM's involvement in the Axis C/C++ project. Paul is a member of the Apache Software Foundation, and he previously served as vice president of the Apache Synapse project.

Integrated Open Source Approach to the Connected Business The WSO2 booth at the O'Reilly Solid Conference will have experts available to discuss the synergistic, integrated approach of WSO2's 100% open source platforms in addressing the demands of the connected business, including the management and security of IoT devices. Among the solutions are: products from the comprehensive WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform, including WSO2 Identity Server, WSO2 Governance Registry, and WSO2 API Manager; WSO2 Enterprise Mobility Manager; and the WSO2 Private PaaS and WSO2 Public Cloud platforms.

Significantly, all WSO2 solutions are built on the same fully componentized, OSGI-compliant code base. As a result, developers can easily deploy and customize any of these WSO2 products and the 175-plus components on which they are comprised, providing greater flexibility and agility to meet changing enterprise demands.

In addition to WSO2 cloud platforms, all WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware products also are fully multitenant and cloud-ready. This means IT professionals can write an application once and deploy it on the same middleware on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid environment.

About O'Reilly Solid Conference The O'Reilly Solid Conference is where the new multi-disciplinary community forming around the convergence of software and hardware will gather to explore what lies ahead as software increasingly interacts with the physical world. The impact of this phenomenon goes far beyond the development of intelligent new consumer products, with changes including APIs for the physical world, data-driven things as a service and the Internet of Things. This inaugural two day conference attracts business leaders, engineers, researchers, and innovators for interactive experiences, thought-provoking presentations, demos and conversations.
