MIC's Tanzanian unit sets up 'Tigo Business' unit to develop fibre/cable services [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Media and telecoms group Millicom International Cellular (MIC) says its Tanzanian mobile subsidiary has created a 'Tigo Business' unit to develop a series of products using high speed fibre connections across the country to support the needs of large corporate organisations, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Tigo Business commercial services will be available from the third quarter of 2014, with Millicom Tanzania (Tigo) currently working on the expansion and improvement of its existing fibre infrastructure. In a press release, the unit confirmed that 'local and international businesses will be able to benefit from Tigo's own extensive fibre infrastructure, which supports its mobile network, and on which there is considerable capacity to support the high speed connectivity now required by so many Tanzanian companies'. Furthermore, the service provider is also exploring the potential for deploying cable services to consumers in relevant urban areas and expects a pilot service to be underway later in 2014.
