Photo: Courtesy of Samsung China Semiconductor Samsung Electronics kicked off the completion of its new semiconductor factory in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province at a ceremony May 9, which will produce NAND flash memory chips. It took 20 months to construct the new facility since Samsung broke ground at the Xi'an Hi-tech Integrated Free Trade Zone in 2012. The Korean electronics giant said it will use the new 230,000-square meter facility to produce its 10-nanometer NAND flash memory chips. Samsung has invested a total of $7 billion in the facility, making it the largest single foreign investment in China. As Chinese consumers purchase nearly half of the world's total NAND flash memory, Samsung can better respond to customers' demands by launching its plant in China. "The high efficiency shown here is rare for such projects. It is a successful combination of 'Samsung management' and 'Shaanxi efficiency,'" said Lou Qinjian, Governor of Shaanxi Province during the ceremony. "Xi'an, as the start of Silk Road, has played an important role in cultural communication. We hope through the joint efforts of China and South Korea, Samsung China Semiconductor will become the new beginning of the '21st century digital silk road,'" said Kwon Oh-hyun, representative executive officer of Samsung Electronics. Samsung plans to invest another $500 million to complete a NAND flash post-step line in Xi'an at the end of 2014.
