National Council for Behavioral Health and Eli Lilly and Company Award Felton Institute's PREP Program with Prestigious Inspiring Hope Award for Excellence in Mental Health

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

The National Council for Behavioral Health (National Council) honored Felton Institute's PREP (Prevention and Recovery in Early Psychosis) program with its prestigious Science to Service Award at its annual Awards of Excellence gala honoring achievements in mental health.

PREP was recognized at the Awards of Excellence celebration in conjunction with the National Council's Annual Conference. The conference features influential leaders in the mental health field including Former Representative Patrick Kennedy and Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The Science to Service Award recognizes an innovative behavioral health organization committed to innovation that has translated new research into practice to provide better care for persons with mental illness and improve treatment outcomes.

Founded and operated by the Felton Institute in partnership with the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and other community partners, PREP provides services using five evidence-based practices in synergy.

According to Felton President and CEO Bob Bennett, "PREP's vision is to transform the treatment and perception of psychosis - and by extension the lives of young people and their families - by intervening early with culturally competent diagnosis and treatment, with the goal of achieving sustainable remission."

PREP's early results show dramatic improvements in outcomes for clients, including 70% reduction in hospitalizations and psychiatric crisis, a near doubling of participation in work and school within one year, and increases in social functioning and cognitive capacity.

Serving over 250 clients each year in five Northern California counties, PREP is one of the largest outpatient treatment programs for early psychosis in the U.S. In 2013, Felton established the BEAM (Bipolar Early Assessment Management) program to take a similar approach to bipolar I disorder.

PREP is funded in part through a Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Award, through Funding Opportunity Number CMS-1C1-12-0001.
