Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy Accepting Applications

PHOENIX --(Business Wire)--

The Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy, the flagship program of the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership at the Flinn Foundation, is now accepting applications for its 2014 cohort.

About 35 Arizonans from around the state, all walks of life, and all perspectives will be selected in a highly competitive process to join a prestigious network committed to state-level civic leadership. Applications are due May 19 and are available here, in addition to more information about the Academy.

The 2014 cohort that starts in September will be the seventh since the Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy began in 2010. Today, more than 150 Arizonans are part of the Flinn-Brown network.

The ideal candidate for the Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy…

  • Is a committed, proven, ambitious leader who aspires to serve Arizona at the state level as an elected official; a state government executive or policy advisor; a member of a state board, commission, or advisory council; or an executive in a statewide organization that significantly affects public policy;
  • Has led or participated in collaborative processes to make fact-driven decisions for long-term benefits;
  • Is comfortable analyzing complexity and uncertainty;
  • Will consider many perspectives when addressing challenges and opportunities;
  • Has taken steps to develop as a civic leader and serve the community;
  • Appreciates today's historical, cultural, social, and political context for leadership; and
  • Enhances the image of public service through high ethical standards, civility, and achievement.

Those chosen to be Flinn-Brown Fellows are expected to participate fully in…

  • 12 intensive day-long seminars and a Leader-in-Residence event from early September through mid-November;
  • Performance coaching for state-level civic leadership; and
  • Ongoing activities and long-term support to build individual capacity and strengthen the Fellows' network.

"The Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy is a long-term initiative to ensure Arizona has the future state-level leaders it needs," said Nancy Welch, Vice President of the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership at the Flinn Foundation. "I know there are many more Arizonans who want to make a difference and would be terrific contributors to the state. Flinn-Brown is anxious to identify and involve more committed leaders from all walks of life and perspectives in its network."

There is no charge for the Academy. Mileage and lodging expenses are paid for those who must travel to sessions.

The Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy, which aims to expand the number of Arizonans dedicated to state-level public service and equipped to make fact-driven decisions for long-term benefits, is sponsored by the Flinn Foundation and the Thomas R. Brown Foundations, private, statewide philanthropies based in Phoenix and Tucson, respectively.

Civic leadership is one of the Flinn Foundation's four major program areas, along with advancing the biosciences, arts and culture, and the Flinn Scholars Program in Arizona. The Foundation is a privately endowed, philanthropic grantmaking organization established in 1965 by Dr. Robert S. and Irene P. Flinn to improve the quality of life in Arizona to benefit future generations.
