Infonetics Survey: Operators Internalizing API Development, Name Huawei and Oracle Top SDP Vendors

CAMPBELL, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Market research firm Infonetics Research released excerpts from its 2014 SDP Strategies and Vendor Leadership: Global Service Provider Survey, which explores operators' strategies for deploying service delivery platforms (SDPs), use cases driving their deployments, and their views of the major vendors playing in the SDP market.

SDP ANALYST NOTE

"Interest in service exposure and APIs (application programming interfaces) continues to grow, driven by operators' desire to interject themselves into the over-the-top value chain," notes Shira Levine, directing analyst, service enablement and subscriber intelligence at Infonetics Research.

"However," Levine continues, "We saw less interest in this year's SDP survey in pursuing the so-called 'long tail' approach, where APIs are made available to third parties, suggesting that operators are more likely to leverage APIs as part of a strategy to work with internal developers and partners in creating and delivering new services."

SDP SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Time to market is again the chief business driver for respondents' service delivery platform (SDP) investments, followed closely by exposing APIs for internal development teams
  • Leading the list of SDP deployment barriers are cost and complexity
  • Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software is playing a major role in SDP strategies: 41% of respondents say their SDPs will be COTS-based with just minor customization, and an additional 9% reveal their SDPs will be based entirely on COTS
  • Half of respondent operators indicated they are considering deploying SDPs in an internal cloud model, while 23% are evaluating an external cloud model
  • Just 14% percent of respondents named the marketing department as the budget-holder for SDPs, down from 33% in last year's survey
  • When asked who they consider to be the top SDP suppliers, those surveyed most often named Huawei and Oracle (News - Alert) (tied for 1st), then Ericsson and OpenCloud (tied for 2nd)
