NEW YORK --(Business Wire)--

Twenty-nine distinguished Latinas from New York were awarded special recognition by El Diario newspaper for making a significant difference and impact in their communities. The honors took place at the annual "Mujeres Destacadas" (Exemplary Women) event on April 18 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City. Telemundo Network Correspondent Isolda Peguero served as the mistress of ceremonies, with an address from Rossana Rosado, Publisher Emeritus of El Diario. Dra. Ana Maria Polo, host of renowned Telemundo show "Caso Cerrado con la Dra. Ana Maria Polo," delivered the keynote address.

ImpreMedia's signature editorial and event series "Mujeres Destacadas" is currently in its nineteenth year overall. The event honors exceptional women for their outstanding contributions at a volunteer or professional level in the areas of community leadership, health, education, business and technology, and arts and cuture.

"'Mujeres Destacadas' was created to recognize the achievements of Latinas who, through their leadership and vision, have helped change lives in our community," said Mónica Lozano, Chief Executive Officer of impreMedia. "These women are an inspiration and embody what it means to be a true pillar of society. We thank them for everything they have done and continue to do."

During her inspirational remarks, Dra. Polo addressed the audience, saying, "To be amongst you is an honor and a privilege. I believe that these events are extremely important because these are the examples for our future generations. People must realize that nothing comes easy in this world; that we have to work hard to achieve what we achieve." She commended the honorees for their hard work, sacrifice and tenacity and moved the audience when she closed with her signature phrase, "¡Caso Cerrado!" (Case Closed).

Among the distinguished guests was Deputy Secretary for Civil Rights in New York, Alphonso David, who delivered a special congratulatory greeting to the honorees on behalf of New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
