Apr. 17--For the past seven years, Jeffrey Herrmann has been the managing director of a very successful midsize theater in Washington, D.C. Herrmann will soon make the leap westward, into the role of piloting a much larger company ? Seattle Repertory Theatre. Seattle Rep has hired Herrmann, the manager of the highly praised Woolly Mammoth Theatre, to replace longtime managing director Ben Moore, who announced his retirement last year. Herrmann has signed a four-year contract starting July 1 with the Rep, the largest playhouse in the Seattle region. He plans to move here in June with his actress wife, Sara, and their toddler son. At Woolly Mammoth, Herrmann has managed a 265-seat, courtyard-style theater with a budget of about $4 million. In Seattle, he'll run an operation with a budget well over twice that size, and with two theaters, the 842-seat Bagley Wright and the 282-seat Leo K. Herrmann's hiring may be further indication of the Rep's goal to expand its commissioning and production of new scripts. Woolly Mammoth has a national reputation for developing new plays and has presented recent works by Sarah Ruhl, Mike Daisey, Lisa D'Amour and other noted contemporary writers. Under his watch, it produced 18 world premieres of plays, under the artistic direction of the theater's founder, Howard Shalwitz. Herrmann also oversaw a doubling of the company's budget and the completion of a $4 million artistic-capital campaign. Before his association with Woolly Mammoth, Herrmann spent eight years as producing director of Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska. He also previously served as manager of the Albany Berkshire Ballet in Pittsfield, Mass., and as associate manager of the Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, Conn.
