Zelnak to retire from Martin Marietta board [The Augusta Chronicle, Ga. :: ]

(Augusta Chronicle (GA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 17--Aiken native Stephen Zelnak Jr. announced Thursday that he will be retiring as chairman of the board of Martin Marietta Materials Inc. in May.

Zelnak, 69, will retire at the stone aggregrate giant's annual shareholder meeting on May 22. He has been the chairman since 1997.

Martin Marietta, based in Raleigh, N.C., is the nation's second largest producer of construction aggregates and has several quarries throughout the Augusta metro area.

Not only was Zelnak the company's board chairman, but served as chief executive officer from 1993 to 2009.

The new chairman will be current president and CEO Howard Nye, the company announced.

"I have great confidence in the company's leadership team and its future -- they've done an outstanding job navigating a very challenging environment," Zelnak said. "In his expanded role as chairman, I am confident Ward will provide strong, objective and thoughtful leadership to the board based on his deep understanding not just of the industry, but also of Martin Marietta's values and strategy." Zelnak was born in Savannah, Ga., but raised in Aiken. He received a bachelor's degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and two master's degrees from the University of Alabama.

Zelnak joined Martin Marietta in 1981. He served as president of the materials group from 1992 until the formation of Martin Marietta Materials in 1993 when he became CEO.

Zelnak oversaw the transformation of Martin Marietta into a publicly traded company in 1996 and the completion of more than 70 acquisitions. He is also chairman and majority owner of ZP Enterprises, a private investment firm engaged in the purchase of small manufacturing companies, and a director of Beazer Homes USA Inc., a leading national homebuilder.
