On the last day of the show, Al Tayer was certified by the Green Project Management Sustainable Centre of Excellence as being carbon neutral, the first CEO to receive this award in the region. Al Tayer received the award, from Joel Carboni, Founder and President of GPM Global, in recognition of DEWA s continuing efforts in following environmentally-friendly standards for managing projects by applying international best practices in green projects.


The aim of this award is to recognise companies role in applying best practices in the management of green projects.

Moreover, SGS GULF has awarded DEWA with the ISO 14064 certificate to be one of the first organisations in the UAE that is recognised with such a certificate in recognition of its efforts in environmental sustainability reflecting the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, to establish the UAE as a world leader in green economy and a centre for trade, finance, tourism, and green economy, in accordance with DEWA s vision to be a sustainable world class sustainable utility and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 to decrease the consumption of energy by 30 percent by 2030.

"This new achievement strengthens our journey to enhance transparency and credibility in the measurement and monitoring and reporting processes and decreasing carbon dioxide emissions and identifying responsibilities and risks pertaining to emissions resulting from global warming," said Al Tayer.

"We always strive to adopt the highest international standards in environment and we have achieved competitive results in adopting clean sustainability procedures in our development projects in coordination with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence." DEWA was verified through a series of stringent examinations on levels of designing and developing of enterprise-level greenhouse gas inventories including quantifying, monitoring and reporting emission reductions. The results showed that the amount of emissions comply with the standards of ISO 14064, which ensures DEWA s efforts in achieving better environmental outputs that are a matter of pride to the UAE and Dubai in particular and reinforces its journey in sustainability. The verification process was done with support from Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence and SGS GULF based on the standards of ISO 14064-3:2006. Al Tayer has received a certificate from Rachid Cherkaoui, Regional Head and MD of SGS Gulf, during a ceremony held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of WETEX 2014.

To integrate this achievement, DEWA established a framework for monitoring and reporting to verify procedures to follow in the coming years. DEWA is proud that 12 employees from different departments have trained and completed the ISO 14064 provided by Bureau Veritas.

Al Tayer handed certificates to the employees at WETEX 2014. This step will contribute to applying DEWA s strategy in reducing carbon emissions.

In addition, DEWA has announced the winners of the tenth Best Consumer Award during Smartech Shopper 2014, the inaugural consumer exhibition organised in conjunction with WETEX 2014.

The Best Consumer Award encourages DEWA's residential customers to reduce the consumption of electricity and water and implement eco-friendly practices to reduce the use of natural resources required to generate electricity for a sustainable future, for generations to come.

"DEWA consistently raises awareness about conservation and the rational use for electricity and water among the residents of Dubai by conducting awareness campaigns throughout the year to achieve real savings in the consumption of electricity and water in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. This award comes at a time where DEWA is making rapid strides in enhancing a responsible culture within society to conserve natural resources," said Al Tayer.

Al Tayer said that the levels of savings in the consumption of water and electricity achieved by the winners ranges from 17-53% for water and 17-56% for electricity, which is a clear indicator of the efficacy of these campaigns in raising awareness across all aspects of society.

"We are proud of the innovative ways in which DEWA's customers have achieved remarkable savings that exceeded 50% in one year alone. This proves the success of the conservation campaigns led by DEWA and the interaction it generated with customers," Al Tayer added.

DEWA has managed to save 5,902,065kWh of electricity and 33,564,486 gallons of water in 2013. The total savings for the last 5 years is over AED 22.4 million.

SmarTech Shopper, which is held under the theme "For A Better Life", also witnessed impressive numbers of retail visitors where exhibitors presented various household appliances and eco-friendly applications. The visitors had the opportunity to get special deals for various household appliances.

SmarTech Shopper has proved that it is also a platform for end users considering they are the largest consumer segment of water and electricity. It also raised awareness about DEWA s efforts to preserve natural resources and support environmentally-sustainable concepts.

"SmarTech Shopper is part of DEWA s commitment to the Smart City initiative and it has provided a platform for the region's leading trade and retail eco-friendly products. The exhibition primarily targeted consumers, which enhanced DEWA s efforts to reach out to students and all members of the community and encourage them to rationalise their consumption of water and electricity at home, including contributing to preserving the environment and natural resources," said Al Tayer.

SmarTech Shopper is a remarkable leap in DEWA s services where it has provided eco-friendly products with competitive prices compared to their conventional counterparts. DEWA has allocated 9 booths to encourage the public and visitors to adapt to sustainable solutions.

Many seminars were also organized on the side lines of SmarTech Shopper to educate the public about using eco-friendly products during WETEX and Green Week.

DEWA has signed an agreement with Dubai Carbon, to mitigate the effects of climate change by the efficient use of the UAE s resources, reducing the carbon intensity and energy consumed in line with the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, the UAE Vision 2021 and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.

The agreement also will bridge closer links between students, students unions and DEWA by providing students with valuable skills in reducing carbon emissions, adopting cleaner energy sources and more efficient industrial processes.

DEWA will provide Dubai Carbon with access to its experts through a formulation of a working group to identify areas of synergy and contribute in country-specific activities like the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative and Expo 2020.

DEWA also signed signed an MoU with LG Electronics, which produces household electronics. Both parties joined hands in promoting green and sustainable products and solutions, developing and partnering sustainable awareness campaigns, promoting offers and campaigns by LG dedicated to DEWA s employees for eco-friendly products and solutions.

"DEWA is signing these MoUs to achieve the vision of Government of Dubai in making Dubai a centre for sustainable development in the region by disseminating practices to rationalise electricity and water use and conservation of natural resources within Dubai," said AL Tayer.

The MoU was singed by Khawla Al Mehairi, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at DEWA and Duk Young Kim, President of LG Electronics.

"We have recently been awarded the 2014 ENERGY STAR - Partner of the Year - Sustained Excellence Recognition. This is the highest award for partners of the Energy Star from the US Environmental Protection Agency; for our contribution in spreading the concepts of sustainability worldwide. We expect that our agreement with DEWA will achieve record results because of the special awareness of Dubai s community on several occasions in this area. We will put all our experience in promoting household products that save energy and reduce wastage rates," said Duk Young Kim.

"We value the importance of these MoUs with companies such as LG Electronics, in promoting eco-friendly products and sustainable solutions to raise awareness of sustainability issues among all segments of society in Dubai. Under the agreement, we will be organizing campaigns and promoting products and eco-friendly solutions by LG Electronics to DEWA staff." said Al Tayer.

Al Tayer said that this year witnessed several agreements done by DEWA with leading institutions in hardware and green solutions, to promote green initiatives especially to DEWA s consumers.

DEWA, represented by Al Mehairi, also signed an MoU with B/SH/, represented by Mark Saunders, Chief Executive Officer of Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances Group.

"The objective of this MoU is to encourage among society a culture of sustainability that incorporates a strong awareness of the importance of electricity and water. It is easy to take for granted the electricity we use and the water we consume. These consume our precious natural resources which we need to preserve for future generations. By spreading awareness to society at large of the importance of reducing how much electricity and water we use, and encouraging the use of energy- and water-efficient appliances, in partnerships with internationally-recognised manufacturers, we can all realise our goal to achieve a sustainable future, for generations to come" said Al Mehairi "We aim through this partnership, to target over 10,000 employees working at DEWA in addition to all its consumers. We will promote products and solutions that reduce energy consumption, taking into consideration that a large part of the energy consumed in Dubai is from home appliances," said Saunders.

Al Mehairi signed another agreement on behalf of DEWA, with Osram, to foster a culture of sustainability in all segments of society and raise awareness about the optimal consumption of resources to preserve them for future generations.

More than two-thirds of the global market depends on lighting lamps and lighting systems. OSRAM develop traditional lighting technologies, and energy-saving and LED solutions.

The exhibition has gathered experts, service providers, investors, decision makers and consumers from private and public sectors all under one roof. It has also attracted specialists and experts from electricity water and energy and environment and oil and gas technologies.

The exhibition displayed latest technologies relevant to water, energy, environment, oil, gas, energy resources-management, green economy and development solutions. The exhibition formed an ideal platform to discuss and display the newest topics and happenings in several domains most importantly water, energy, environmental management, sustainable development rationalization of water and electricity sources grids energy management solutions the use of renewable energy especially solar and nuclear. The exhibition acted as a convenient place for companies to display and showcase the newest technologies and solutions in the fields of electricity and water savings.

Many scientific conference and specialised seminars were organised on the sidelines of WETEX 2014 during which participants have discussed the latest developments in energy affairs, research and technological and scientific progress in the areas of sustainable energy.

Such seminars have attracted international experts to discuss the latest solutions in the field of water and various sources of energy.

The topics of discussion included water solutions and related technology including sewage, reverse osmosis, absorption chillers, transportation pipelines and others.

The list included panel discussions on energy, sustainable energy systems, energy management solutions, cable systems, flow clamps, electric distribution systems automation solutions, solar energy solutions, measurement and lighting, converting electricity solutions and PV power plants and other solutions that are being discussed for the first time during these events.

Experts during the seminars discussed ways of sustainable energy and the latest findings on reducing energy and water consumption, energy and water efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Seminars discussions cover renewable sustainable energy, nuclear technology, clean coal, green solutions, water and other topics related to green development.
