Linksys launches WRT successor [ITP.net (United Arab Emirates)]

(ITP.net (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Linksys has taken the wraps off its latest WRT Wi-Fi router, the WRT1900C, which the company claimed is the first consumer-grade Wi-Fi router to feature four external antennas.

The device, a successor to the brand's highly lauded WRT54G router launched 11 years ago, comes with a plethora of new features, including 802.11ac certification, a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 128 MB of flash memory and eSata and USB ports.

The new router also ships with Linksys Smart Wi-Fi set-up and management tools, and has collaborated with OpenWrt to make an open-source alternative available.

"The WRT is a corner stone in the history of Wi-Fi and synonymous for many people in going wireless at home since it was their first wireless router," said Mike Chen, vice president of product management at Linksys.

"The WRT has a cult status for many because of the open source aspect that made it so immensely popular. We are honored to have collaborated with OpenWrt to ensure the Open Source readiness of the product and building a WRT worthy successor with cutting edge hardware and iconic design." Linksys has sold more than 50 million units since the introduction of the original WRT, with the vendor claiming that the model still sells well.

The new device will be available in the Middle East from the end of April.
