(Monitor (McAllen, TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 16--DONNA -- A Donna school district employee has been named to the National Education Association's Board of Directors, according to a Tuesday news release from the Texas State Teachers Association.
The Texas State Teachers Association, or TSTA, selected Linda Estrada of Donna's Runn Elementary School at the association's House of Delegates gathering during the weekend of April 11 through 13 in San Marcos, according to the release. The National Education Association, or NEA, and TSTA are partner organizations.
Estrada works as campus secretary for Runn Elementary, according to the release. Additionally, Estrada serves as president of Donna TSTA/NEA and belongs to the TSTA Board of Directors and TSTA Advisory Committee. Previously she was secretary for the TSTA Hispanic Caucus.
"I am looking forward to this new platform from which to continue my advocacy work for public schools, our students and my fellow education employees," Estrada said in the TSTA release.
Estrada's three-year term on the NEA board is set to begin Sept. 1, said TSTA spokesman Clay Robison. The association's board of directors has approximately 160 voting members, three of which belong to Texas, Robison said.
"Each state's allotment of members is based on how many NEA members that state has," Robison said via email. "Some states have more seats than Texas. Some have only one seat."
The board of directors convenes on four occasions annually, Robison said. Three gatherings take place in Washington, while another happens alongside NEA's yearly Representative Assembly. The 2014 assembly is scheduled for July in Denver, Colorado.
Nationally, approximately 3 million educators and public education workers belong to NEA, according to the TSTA release.
