BRIEF: 911 outage throughout state affects 4,500 calls [The News Tribune (Tacoma, Wash.) :: ]

(News Tribune (Tacoma, WA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 15--The statewide 911 outage Thursday prevented 4,500 emergency calls from reaching dispatchers, CenturyLink said in a statement Monday.

The Louisiana-based telecommunications company contracts with the state to provide the network that routes emergency calls to 911 centers. It said the outage was caused by a malfunction of its third-party vendor's call router.

About 770 911 calls did go through during the outage, which happened between about 12:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., the company said.

"CenturyLink's top priority is customer safety and reliable communications," Brian Stading, Northwest Region president, said in the statement. "We are working closely with our vendor partner to fully to understand this outage. At this time, we are confident that the 911 system is fully operational and stable." ___ (c)2014 The News Tribune (Tacoma, Wash.)
