Osterman Research White Paper, Sponsored by Sonian, Finds Email Archiving and Retention Limitations within Microsoft Office 365

DEDHAM, Mass. --(Business Wire)--

Osterman Research has released its latest white paper, Microsoft® Office 365® for the Enterprise: How to Strengthen Security, Compliance and Control. The paper is sponsored by, among others, Sonian, the pioneer in cloud-powered email archiving. This insightful document explores the Office 365 environment, its applicability to organizations of all sizes and the third-party capabilities that savvy customers should consider in order to supplement the platform, specifically to enhance security, archiving and encryption.

"We believe that Office 365 provides a useful set of features and functions that will, no doubt, be well received by many organizations," said Michael Osterman, President of Osterman Research. "The third-party market for cloud-based and on-premises capabilities designed to supplement or replace specific Office 365 features and functions will grow at a healthy pace as the market for Office 365 grows."

The white paer notes third-party enhancements will provide more granular and capable archiving, security and encryption features to ensure a more robust data management platform.

Additional research findings include:

  • Archiving and retention limitations, such as migration challenges, minimal in-place archival and retention support, inability to support key compliance requirements for SharePoint Online content, 30-day time limits for some mailbox folders, and limitations for end-user search capabilities compared to third party solutions.
  • Security limitations, including lack of support for redundant spam filters, and lack of support for some of the more advanced threat protection techniques.
  • Microsoft (News - Alert) can move customer data without advance notice, with no guarantee of where that data will be stored.

"There are a number of obvious advantages and some limitations for organizations considering Office 365, including sub-optimal archiving, security and encryption features, which this Osterman Research white paper makes clear," said Greg Arnette, CTO at Sonian. "Sonian's email archiving solution perfectly complements Office 365 and provides users with seamless integration and migration, unlimited storage and retention, and fast and accurate search to derive meaning and make quicker decisions."

The Sonian email archive service supports hosted and on-premise Exchange, Office 365 and many other messaging servers. It can be quickly deployed without hardware, without software and without up-front costs.

Microsoft Office 365 offers a suite of Office applications, including email, web conferencing and other productivity tools, which are delivered over cloud services such as Exchange Online, Lync Online, OneDrive, Skype (News - Alert) and SharePoint Online.
