Arizona College Students to Compete in Ninth Annual Avnet Tech Games


(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 11 April 2014 Release date- 10042014 - WHAT: More than 185 students from Arizona's community colleges and universities will gather for the ninth annual Avnet Tech Games to compete against other teams and tackle projects encountered by employees at leading technology companies.



Student teams from Arizona State University, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, ITT, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Phoenix Community College, Scottsdale Community College, University of Advancing Technology, and University of Arizona are expected to compete in this year's competitive events, where thousands of dollars in scholarship money and honorariums will be awarded to the winning students and faculty members. Over the course of the past eight years, nearly $260,000 has been given to students and teachers.

The Avnet Tech Games also feature virtual competitions, open to students nationwide. Those competitors will have their work displayed at the event and the winners will be announced during the award ceremony for the onsite games. The virtual games expand the breadth of the onsite Avnet Tech Games by allowing students to compete on a national level without having to attend the onsite games.

At the Avnet Tech Games, students compete in a game-like setting to gain hands-on, practical experience in addition to the academic instruction they receive in the classroom. The Games feature multidisciplinary technology competitions that require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills. The 2014 competitive events include: (All games are sold out) Cisco Networking Expert Battle - Set-up, deploy, troubleshoot and repair a network similar to a small office configuration.

NEW! Desktop Domination - Complete a set of tasks and troubleshoot issues in the Windows 7 operating system.

Digital Design Dilemma - Create, validate and document a FPGA design that works on a provided circuit board.

EMC Green Data Center Challenge - Design your own state-of-the-art data center, from the ground up.

HP Build the Fastest Computer - Build, troubleshoot and tune a PC the fastest.

Java Blitz - Develop an application using Java 7 Standard Edition, which is a popular software development language that is used in many large corporations today.

Robot Race Obstacle Course - Build and program a robot to maneuver objects through different courses.

Solar Scrimmage - Design, build, test and present the best overall solar-powered 'Green Energy' water pumping system.

The 2014 Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games being featured onsite include: Android App Showdown - Students develop a mobile application for the Android platform by using innovative MIT Android App Inventor Technology.

Green Video Competition - Competitors combine video production skills, environmental awareness and marketing skills to create a short video on environmental initiatives at their college.

JDA Supply Chain Challenge - Students manage decisions regarding forecasting, inventory management, capacity management, schedule and pricing.

Winning team: Southern Methodist University - Aaron Barnard, Matt Mulholland, Tushar Solanki and Meredith Titus.

Each winning student of the virtual and onsite Avnet Tech Games will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Faculty members will collect $200 for leading participating teams and an additional $300 for each winning team. Participating students will also have the opportunity to attend a networking hour, where they can connect with event sponsors and executives from companies such as CDW, Cisco, Datalink, EMC, HP, DPAIR, JDA, Microchip, Nimble Storage and Sungard.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Interview opportunities include executives and recruiters from the event's sponsors, and participating students and faculty.
