Netbook company woos consumers with extra features [Business Daily (Kenya)]

(Business Daily (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Asus Transformer Book has hit the Kenyan market as the company tries to solidify its hold on local consumers by increasing the warranty period on its products.

Currently, the Asus notebooks have a one-year warranty which has been extended to two, with the device manufacturer taking charge of replacing the device or even the defective parts.

"As an emerging product in the market, locally, we felt it was crucial that we assure our customers of our continued support even after purchase of product to ensure that they do get the most out of the products and have a great experience," said Asus Kenya product manager Chris Wen.

The Transformer Book T100 combines the experience of a tablet and a netbook in one. Retailing at Sh50,000 at different outlets, the notebook comes with a keyboard in addition to the touch capability of the screen.

The device is an upgrade from the traditional 10-inch netbook but is lagging behind when users are faced with a choice between it and a tablet.

As a tablet, the device is slightly thicker than an average tab, but it is on the lighter side making it easy to hold.

Half the weight of the device is on the tablet the other on the keyboard adding up to a total of a kilogramme.

Great news for users is that the device is charged using a micro USB which comes detachable from the power head.

The front camera is only 1.3 megapixels and needs good light for pictures,  but is otherwise okay when it comes to video calls.

Fret not if you need to move data to or from the tablet as it comes with a Micro-USB slot, Micro HDMI, a microSD slot and on the keyboard a full USB3.0 port.

For data it has Bluetooth 4.0 and access to Wi-Fi.

The recent launch by the Kenya Private Schools Association to provide laptops to students saw Asus introduce the laptop equipped with the Microsoft Office Student Edition that comes pre-installed in the devices procured from authorised dealers along with unlimited Asus cloud storage.

The device comes in Windows 8.1 PC running on the latest Intel (Bay Trail) Atom processor which offers speed and battery life efficiency. The battery life, however, is relative, depending on whether you compare it to a tablet or a laptop.

By tablet standards, it is at the same level as high-end devices in this category but the same cannot be said when compared to laptops, which can work for much longer when unplugged.

The device faces competition in the market from the Dell Venue 8 Pro and the Acer Iconia W3.
