Tokyo Electron and Circuit of The Americas Join Forces to Support STEM Education

AUSTIN, Texas --(Business Wire)--

On April 11, 2014, Tokyo Electron (TEL) and Circuit of The Americas (COTA) will host students participating in an educational program that highlights applications of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. In conjunction with TEL's corporate responsibility initiatives relating to STEM education, TEL is inviting college students from the Texas State University "SPARK" program and high school students from the Harmony School of Excellence in Southeast Austin to the COTA racing facility in Austin, Texas, for the 2014 Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas MotoGP event to see demonstrations while participating in discussions relating to STEM.

TEL was asked to partner with Texas State as the primary industry representative to the "SPARK" initiative last fall, in an effort to provide support and enrichment opportunities for students studying STEM subjects. As the corporate leader of the "SPARK" program, TEL provides opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, plant tours, and academic/personal mentoring throughout each semester. TEL also has worked with Harmony to provide presentations demonstrating the importance of leadership, accountability and initiative in obtaining a college degree in STEM fields.

"Being a part of the local community in Austin and acting as the primary industry partner for the "SPARK" initiative at Texas State University, it has been an incredibly rewarding opportunity for the students & our TEL US employees who have volunteered to act as life coaches, STEM career mentors & friends to these remarkable young students. As they progress throughout their journey in academics, we plan to provide opportunities for them to see how STEM works in everyday life. In the end, it's about the students' economic and social upward mobility through education, and this is something TEL gladly supports!" said Barry Mayer, president of Tokyo Electron US Holdings.

This collaboration between TEL and COTA creates a unique opportunity for industry leaders and academia to join together in recognizing these remarkable young students for demonstrating their passion and commitment to pursuing higher education in STEM fields of study. This program aims to inspire students to both continue their STEM education and also allows them an opportunity to see how their education is relevant to everyday settings outside of the classroom while having some fun!

MOTOGP CREDENTIALS NEEDED: Media wishing to cover the students' visit to COTA on April 11 must already be accredited to cover the MotoGP event at COTA, April 11-13. Media credentials can be picked up at the Media Accreditation Center, located in the Ticket Office behind COTA's Main Grandstand.
